Ambassador Matsumoto, the Ambassador of Japan to Iraq, attended a foundation laying ceremony for the Japan Village Project in Mosul
June 25, 2024

On June 25, Ambassador Futoshi MATSUMOTO, the Ambassador of Japan to Iraq, along with Ninawa Governor Mr. Abdulqader Al-Dakhil and representatives from Japanese companies like Toyota Iraq, Sumitomo Corporation, Nippon Paint, and TOTO, as well as the Peace Winds of Japan NGO, participated in a roundtable discussion. The focus was on a new initiative called “Japan Village,” a project being carried out by UN-Habitat in collaboration with these Japanese companies and NGO. The project aims to provide housing for returning internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly the most vulnerable groups such as female-led households and individuals with disabilities. Additionally, it seeks to offer capacity-building programs for unemployed youth to enhance their construction skills and work experience.

After the discussion, the group visited the project site in the Rajm Hadeed Neighborhood of Mosul, where the Ambassador and the Governor laid the foundation stone for the Japan Village Project. Japan remains committed to supporting the most vulnerable in Iraqi society. Ambassador Matsumoto expressed his hope that this innovative approach to Japanese humanitarian aid, which combines efforts from Japanese companies and NGOs, would encourage more Japanese investment in Mosul.
